Michael Smith (he/him)
Executive Director, Charleston Symphony
Speaking at CPR for Growing Audience (Care, Programming, Reinvention)
Michael Smith is driven to advance the artform of orchestral music to be a sustainable and integral part of modern society.
Michael began his tenure with the Charleston Symphony (CSO) as a musician in the orchestra. Following the challenges of the Great Recession, he believed the CSO needed Executive Leadership that matched the passion of its musicians. Smith was appointed Executive Director in 2013. Under his leadership, the CSO completed each year leading up to the pandemic with positive operating results and the CSO became one of the only orchestras in the United States to continue to safely perform symphonic music for live audiences without pause. On the heels of the pandemic, Smith secured a $2M gift that ultimately led to the CSO’s first-ever endowment campaign resulting in $15M raised, securing the organization’s future.
Smith graduated with a Bachelor of Music degree from the Manhattan School of Music in 2000. Upon graduation, he received the award for Excellence in Brass Performance.
